OMG I'm writing my resignation letter!

I've dreamed about this day for a few years. Now, it is actually happening.

I'm in the process of drafting my resignation letter. I plan on leaving 8/26 (I have an actual date!).

I've spent some time (well, the last few hours) reading various articles and sample letters on the 'Net. Some of the articles say to keep it short and sweet, others say to briefly explain your reasons to leave, thank the employer for the job, offer to train a replacement, express regret for leaving, etc.

I think that I've created a good letter... I wanted your opinion on it (if you don't mind). I plan on submitting this letter sometime next week.

Quote:
Dear Greg,

I am writing you today to officially tender my resignation from xxxxxxx effective Friday, August 26, 2005.

I have been presented with an opportunity to further my formal education, and have been accepted for graduate school studies for the upcoming Fall semester.

Over the last almost fifteen years with the company, I have met some wonderful people and have enjoyed working with them. You and I made a great team, and I do appreciate all of the professional and personal advice you have shared over the years. I believe that your direction has helped to shape me into doing the best possible job for the company.

I will be happy to help train my replacement or whatever else you believe will help facilitate the transition.

If you have any questions, please ask. Again, thank you for everything over the years. My experience with xxxxx has been both rewarding and productive, and I wish the best for you and the company.

Sincerely,
Any comments or suggestions to tweak it? I'm trying to make this as classy a resignation as I can. I have to admit that, while I've not been happy for a few years, overall, the company has been good to me. I'm definitely wanting to use them as a reference in 18 months when I get out of school. My supervisor (for those of you that don't know) is a personal friend -- he was even a groomsman at my wedding. This will likely be a shock for him (he knows in Feb. I was ready to walk over the promotion rejection).

Re OMG I'm writing my resignation letter!

I think your letter is right on the money, IMO, especially knowing as I do from your posts how unhappy you have been in the company the past little while.

You wrote a quick, clean, kind, professional letter that gave out enough information to spare a friend and colleague's feelings and yet managed to keep your discontent with the company from showing - good job!

Very professional, Jeff. You can put the pen down now.

Re OMG I'm writing my resignation letter!

Good letter Jeff. Just some "teacher suggestions" :

for the upcoming Fall semester.----change "for" to "during"

advice you have shared --with me--over the years.

Very nice letter and well said.

Excellent letter, Jeff. I think it's as classy as resignations get.

Re OMG I'm writing my resignation letter!

I think it's good, but consider putting in your request to be paid off for your vacation and any other final considerations.

BTW, I'm late to this discussion but just wanted to let you know that Ive taught for the University of Phoenix (as well as a local community college and state university) for the last 6 years and you can assure your dad that UoPhx is a "real" accredited university. My students get the same quality of instruction and they leave with the same skills. That said, there are some excellent reasons to choose a more traditional school. And, if you are required to take a business stats class, let me know if you need some help with the course content. I've taught both onground and online courses and have extensive course notes and Excel help files.

Wink Re OMG I'm writing my resignation letter!

Dear Jeff,

Yeah, I go by the screen name of erik_kosberg but since you've never met Erik Kosberg in real life, you're just assuming that there's really somebody out there named Erik Kosberg. But the net is funny that way, you never can know about what people might use as a screen name.

Maybe you want to wait until August, but I don't. You're fired.

Sincerely,
Greg

Re OMG I'm writing my resignation letter!

That's cute. Fortunately, my boss isn't very computer proficient. I have to show him simple stuff in e-mail. I'm 100% positive he's not posting on any message boards.

Anyhow, if I get fired before I can resign, I can collect unemployment.

Deb,

Thanks for the offer. The best man at my wedding is also a prof at Phoenix. He also teaches statistics.

What? What is this? We don't get to see the first draft? I mean, the word "soulsucking" isn't in there even ONCE. Geez, what a ripoff.
