| | Tuesday I submit my resignation | | I've never done this before. I'm excited and nervous as hell.
I feel badly for my supervisor. He's not going to take this well. |

| | Re Tuesday I submit my resignation | | Yeah, except I've not gotten any sleep tonight. Sigh. My mind's racing. I sort of expected that, though. |

| | Re Tuesday I submit my resignation | | Well, maybe you'll be so tired that you won't care what sort of fallout results from today.
Best of luck Jeff!

| | Re Tuesday I submit my resignation | | Jeff,
Your letter was well-written and your immediate supervisor is a friend. I expect he'll react much as my husband's boss did when he announced his retirement in May. First, he asked why, then "are you sure?"
Then he gave him 3 months worth of work to get done in 6 weeks. I hope you're up for that.

| | Re Tuesday I submit my resignation | | Okay... here's my little report.
Started off by walking into the office at 6:35am. Didn't expect to see my supervisor there, but he was. Lucky for me, I printed up a back-up copy not on office stationary this morning before I left for work. I pulled him aside, we spoke in an office for about 15 minutes and discussed the situation.
He indicated he totally understands and thinks it is great. He says he'll be sorry to see me go, but really is excited for me and what this can do for my future. He said not to worry, the company will survive with or without me, and while this is a very hard time to lose someone, the company will manage. He told me he was jealous over the opportunity.
We then found my manager at about 7am and my supervisor presented her with my resignation letter. She didn't read it all and was unhappy that I was "jumping ship" and Greg told her to read the whole thing. Afterwards, she felt badly about her comment and said it sounded like a great opportunity, and that there was really no hard feelings since I wasn't going to work for the competition.
I went out on an inspection, came back about 9:30am, and the word had already cycled around the whole office. So, instead of getting any work done, I spent the whole day repeating what I told everyone else today. I felt like writing a mass e-mail so that people would leave me alone so that I could work. Then, it hit me, I really don't mind, because in a month, this will all be someone else's problem.
I've decided that I'm going to work as I've been working until it is time for me to go. Again, I think that's the high road approach to it. Yes, they're going to continue to saddle me with work, and they were planning on sending me to Kansas at the end of the week to work hail claims, but my plans changed their minds and they're going to send someone else. |

| | Re Tuesday I submit my resignation | | I think that's wonderful and am happy for you that things worked out.
Be prepared for an onslaught of well-wishers and others who want to do things like take you to lunch (even if you've never had lunch with them before). Still others, people you hardly know, will want to know intimate details about why you chose to leave.
Continue taking the high ground. I've done so three times now and in every single instance have used a senior manager or other affiliation with the old company at my new job. Go out with chin held high and a smile on your face, Jeff. I promise that you will feel like a million bucks. |

Just try to avoid the "coming to work in the bathrobe" stage on your way out. It's good to take the high road, just avoid rubbing the fact that you're taking the high road in people's faces.
Unless they really, REALLY deserve it.
