| | Office Party for a Groom-to-be | | An employee of mine, oftened refer to as my office son, is getting married in a few weeks.
I'd really like to throw him some sort of party in the office before the wedding but have been told that "you just don't do that for guys."
Why not? If he were a woman, there wouldn't be a second thought to throwing a bridal shower. Why should it be different with a man?
I think he deserves a toast and a send off at the minimum. Sure we can forego the frou frou stuff, but shouldn't he get his props at this special time in his life? He's a very gregarious sort. He'd love the attention.
What do you folks think? You guys especially. Is it appropriate to plan an office party for a groom? Or is it the most dreadful thing imaginable?
And, if you think a party is in order, do you have any particular recommendations? I'd love some ideas. I've already thought of calling it a Groom and Doom party.

| | Re Office Party for a Groom-to-be | | I think it would be a great idea! A guy shower would work just fine. I know that my nephew registered for lots of tools and stuff and even 30 years ago some of my husband's clients bought him gifts such as bbq apron, tools, etc. He loved it! You could also ask the bride to be and have a couple's shower, if most would rather have that. But, personally I think a Groom and Doom party would be fun and refreshing. |

| | Re Office Party for a Groom-to-be | | Sara, I think it's a great idea. We're doing a shower for Bridezilla (matter of fact, were doing some planning today) and I think you could have a blast. I love the idea of the tool registry...for God's sake, 99% of the stuff bought for a wedding/shower is "really" for the bride, so I think a Groom and Doom is a wonderful plan.
Have fun!!!

You know how they do wishing wells for brides? Do a toolbox for him. Everyone can bring a small "tool" gift. It'll be fun! And a bachelor cake. |

| | Re Office Party for a Groom-to-be | | 1. Yes you can do a party, I'm sure he will appreciate it
2. How big is the office and what is the budget? When I got married (the first time), they had a special lunch at a restaurant and invited my fiance as well and my co-workers each gave us well wishes. I was also invited to my ex's office (larger staff) where they had a cake and gave us presents.
In other words, there are lots of options. |

| | Re Office Party for a Groom-to-be | | The year that we got married, there was a male teacher who also was engaged to be married. The staff had a shower for me, and one for him. I got the typical girl stuff, he got "guy" stuff--the things around the house that are somewhat "male" in nature.
A few years ago, one of the guys on our staff was having his first baby. Well, technically his wife was having the baby, but since he was "our" employee, we had the shower for him. His wife, and his mom were invited, and we got the things we all thought a new dad could use!! We had a lot of fun planning it, and the day of the shower was great!!!

| | Re Office Party for a Groom-to-be | | Absolutely. We used to do them all the time.
And LOL on the "guy" stuff... most of the kitchen stuff we registered for was FOR G. I'm not a big cook... I bake. |

| | Re Office Party for a Groom-to-be | | Thanks everyone. I feel sufficiently validated.
I was thinking of having cake and champagne in the conference room after work one day, but perhaps going offsite to a restaurant is a better idea. I'll take a casual poll in the office next week and see what goes over better.
Either way, I'll definitely invite the bride. She would get a huge kick out of it too.

| | Re Office Party for a Groom-to-be | | If it's too big a culture shock to do a "shower" with individual presents, have the cake and champagne and take up a collection to stick in an envelope or for one big gift like a grill. This works especially well in workplaces with a high man:woman ratio.

| | Re Office Party for a Groom-to-be | | Okay, the party has been scheduled. It'll be next Thursday night at a local restaurant.
People will be chipping in for a group gift and we'll be setting up a "manly man's" wishing well.
The bride will be our decoy. Once we figure out our ruse, that is.
Ah well, I still have a few days to work out that little detail.

| | Re Office Party for a Groom-to-be | | I just got off the phone with the bride. She has it all figured out.
I got a huge kick out of it when she said, "This is so cool! My first scheme!"

| | Re Office Party for a Groom-to-be | | The party is tomorrow and I've spent a good part of the last few days in preparation.
I took up a collection in the office and with the funds bought him a collection of power tools that he's been drooling over -- DeWalt 18V Cordless Drill/Driver/Hammer, Circular Saw, Shop Light, Two Batteries and Charger in a nifty, rugged hard case.
From me alone I put together a "New Husband's Honey Do Survival Gear" kit as shown below:
Inside is:
A collection of important tools he'll need to make his bride happy, neatly tucked into a rugged, manly tool belt:
A scrub brush
A sponge
Rubber gloves
A bottle of Joy
A spray bottle of Pledge
A measuring cup and spoon set
A bag of Hershey's Kisses
A box of Calgon Bath Beads (Take Me Away!)
A tube of foot massage lotion
A box of aromatherapy candles
A box of Heat Therapy menstrual cramp patches
And a box of "Lover's Tea for Men"
Think I'm going to survive the evening?
And tonight I built the manly man wishing well for the party:
I learned in doing so that the lack of a Y chromosome is a definite handicap when working with duct tape. It just doesn't come naturally.
I can't wait for the party. This is going to be a lot of fun.
