They're throwing me a huge office party!

Ha! On Thursday, the office is throwing a major going-away party for me. We've got VPs from our suburban Cincinnatti home office coming out for the bash and everything.

They're taking me out for a very nice dinner and everything.

Of course, they're calling it something else entirely -- it appears that our branch has won the "President's Award" for the third year straight. I, of course, choose to think of it as a going-away bash.

Now all I have to do is to convince myself that they're not all thrilled that I'm leaving...

Re They're throwing me a huge office party!

They're not thrilled -- they're giving you a form of celebration or tribute. I went through one a year or so ago. Try not to get choked up when you address the employees. I, of course, was a manly man. That means I stopped talking when my voice broke for the second time.

Enjoy your special day. Let that be the memory you take away with you.

Your old music cannot sustain you through a life, not if you're someone who listens to music every day, at every opportunity. You need input, because pop music is about freshness, about Nelly Furtado and the maddeningly memorable fourth track on a first album by a band you saw on a late-night TV show. And no, that fourth track is not as good as anything on Pet Sounds or Blonde on Blonde or What's Going On, but when was the last time you played Pet Sounds? - Songbook by Nick Hornby

Why not? It isn't like they can fire me.

Oh, yes, they can. I've done it.

"I already quit."

"Yes, and your services are no longer required. Your employment is terminated effective now."

HR people hate to do it, but will do it for very bad things (e.g., theft)

Re They're throwing me a huge office party!

They aren't going to fire me on my last day of work, especially for drinking at a party where there is alcohol served.

Let's just say I'm fully aware of the drinking habits of the VPs that are coming. I can get as sloshed as I want and they could still drink me under the table.

Still a bad idea.

You never know who you'll be working for in the future unless you've consulted your crystal ball.

Be professional, be courteous, leave early. Even if it's all about you.

Re They're throwing me a huge office party!

Lynn,

I still have to drive home, ya know. I have a clean driving record, and I'll not remotely risk a DUI in the process just to have fun my last day of work. Plus, I have a brand-new car that I have little interest in wrecking... ESPECIALLY if I'm drunk.

I'm just saying what I could do if I wanted.

Re They're throwing me a huge office party!

How cool, especially since you worked out of a home office for so many of your years there.

Enjoy your party, and do well at graduate school.
