| | So, just how sick is this going to make me? (or the joys of a cafeteria at work) | | I work for a tiny company in a HUGE building. Because we are so little and the building is so big, we rent out space to other companies. Because we aren't really in walking distance of food places, one company made us having a cafeteria in house a pre-requisite for them leasing space from us.
At first, we were all thrilled. We could stay in the building when it was cold outside and get something for breakfast or lunch.
Unfortunately, the reality has not quite lived up to our hopes.
The food is not always best quality. Fruit salads seem to linger for days and get mushy or brown. Bagels and pastries get stale. Nobody buys the stuff any more because we've all been burned by a stale donut or brown fruit.
Usually, the sandwiches are ok though. Usually.
Today, I got a panini sandwhich. These things come frozen, and the cafeteria staff uses a special press grill to heat them up.
The first half of my sandwich was fine. Then I took a bite from the second half and discovered blue mold. Really blue mold.
On the bright side, this is going to help with my weight loss goals because I don't even want to THINK about food right now.
So, what did you have for lunch?

I had a Subway salad for lunch. Nice, fresh, prepared in front of my own two eyes. Sorry I couldn't share any.

| | Re So, just how sick is this going to make me? (or the joys of a cafeteria at work) | | I had lunch with my sister and her son who is home from California for the weekend. Also my parents, my sister's husband and another of her sons (don't ask) and my son too. It was really nice. My steak was excellent but everyone that had the fish was sorry they did so. It was a really little piece and not much flavor. This is a Mequite restaurant so how it could have little taste is beyond me. Anyhow, lunch was a very nice occassion. |

| | Re So, just how sick is this going to make me? (or the joys of a cafeteria at work) | | Well, since I didn't get a very good report from my doc on Monday I'm having to really watch what I eat. He's put me on a low fat Atkins sorta thing.
I took some pork rinds and crushed them up really well and seasoned a boneless, skinless chicken breast. Took some of that healthy kind of mushroom soup and drenched the breast in it, then dredged in the pork rinds. Baked it until done and it was just pretty dang good.
I'm gonna hate this diet, but I will have fun playing with my food. |

| | Re So, just how sick is this going to make me? (or the joys of a cafeteria at work) | | Lessee. The soup has 2g per 8 oz. and I just used it for a drench. Every 9 pork rinds has 5g and that's what I used with some crumbs left over. I have no idea what the chicken breast contains. My really big issue is the carbs., so I have to be more aware on those. |

| | Re So, just how sick is this going to make me? (or the joys of a cafeteria at work) | | I didn't realize the pork rinds were that low. I would have put them much higher. The chicken, if it was skinless probably doens't have too much. You know Dennis, my friend had a lot more luck with South Beach than Adkins--

And on the pork rinds, I'll be trying the spicy ones next time. |

| | Re So, just how sick is this going to make me? (or the joys of a cafeteria at work) | | We had a luncheon last Thursday for someone leaving. The food was from the place we love the food from... but rarely get it because it's so expensive. IE, if we can get a drug-rep to buy if for the company once a year, we're lucky.
So it was quite a treat to have it. And there was a gigantic spread. Wraps, sandwiches, salad with chicken, pasta salad, cole slaw...
I had piece of a grilled chicken sandwich. It was ok. It had burnt, I mean, grilled veggies on it. I ate this. I had a bite of a turkey wrap that was soggy. I then had a piece of an eggplant sandwich which was to die for. The some of the real salad and some of the pasta salad. Yes, I gorged myself a bit.
Two hours later, I was running to the bathroom.
After I came out and started looking for my coworker, I was told "she's in the bathroom and it's not going well."
Then I heard another coworker had visited the bathroom with the same issues as soon as she ate lunch.
Soon, three others had the same problem.
And, we had all eaten the chicken sandwich
The problems lasted for most of us until Wednesday. :/ Almost one week.
I think if you haven't run to the bathroom yet, you're probably good. |

| | Re So, just how sick is this going to make me? (or the joys of a cafeteria at work) | | Margaret,
I might look into another common denominator because it's highly unusual for people to get sick from food that soon. If I remember my class correctly it's usually 10-12 hours before symptoms show and lasting a week is an unusually long time. Quote: |
Eating a substance and getting sick immediately afterwards is not the typical course for food poisoning.

Margaret--was the chicken fully cooked? Remember a few years back my hubby got really sick from chicken not completely cooked? He had a bacteria, a serious one, that needed medical attention, and wound up having to be reported to the CDC. It was campylobacter. If all of you had the chicken, and have had "bathrrom" issues, please be careful. He was in the bathroom for 2 days straight before we went to the doc. He was very sick.

| | Re So, just how sick is this going to make me? (or the joys of a cafeteria at work) | | NIH says usually 2 to 6 hours: Quote:
Symptoms Return to top
The symptoms from the most common types of food poisoning generally start within 2 to 6 hours of eating the food responsible. That time may be longer (even a number of days) or shorter, depending on the toxin or organism responsible for the food poisoning. The possible symptoms include:
* Nausea and vomiting
* Abdominal cramps
* Diarrhea (may be bloody)
* Fever and chills
* Weakness (may be serious and lead to respiratory arrest, as in the case of botulism)
* Headache
| Margaret, did anyone alert the Health Department? |

| | Re So, just how sick is this going to make me? (or the joys of a cafeteria at work) | | No, we did not alert the health department.
The girl who got sick right away has IBS.
My instinct is to blame the food. We all had that food in common. But there are really 3 "offices" if you will that in theory ate the same stuff as us (although you picked and choose what was on your plate and there was a huge variety). No one in the other two offices got sick. Could a bug have gone through our office? We thought it was possible too.
The food was so good, and I'd like to eat it again. I don't want to think it made me sick. ...but I do. |

| | Re So, just how sick is this going to make me? (or the joys of a cafeteria at work) | | we had "food day" at work-once a month anyone who wants to participate brings in food to celebrate, well everything-birthdays etc... OMG I ate so much we started at 8 am and just kept on going, every time I went in the break room there was more food put out. there were tarts and coblers and seven layer dip and fried rice and pasta and and and....
then I'd promised I'd take the kids to dinner, so we did and OMG I'm going to burst.
Amy-who is in charge of leasing the caffeteria-if the company in it can't cut it, they need to be booted and a new one brought in, a company that offers limited hot/cold food and more packaged food, soda's chips etc.. will likely do better.
