| | OK, so it's all only rumers right now, but I've been informed that one of the biddies is leaving the accounting department.
Leaving a hole.
Which will need to be filled.
And which on paper I'm almost overqualified for.
Which will probably mean more money (not sure yet, the university hasn't posted the job opening yet), and will definately mean working days.
There's so much good and bad about this.
So, yeah, meep.
(And yes, the boyfriend thinks I'm insane for even thinking about this.)

DAYS, Eris??? DAYS? | Plus he's well aware of my "God, I can't stand the day people and all their damn DRAMA" attitude. Plus it puts me closer to the comptroller, who I have a love/hate relationship with. Plus, yeah, it's DAYS.
And yes, the rumor has indeed been confirmed. Oh, boy.
A list. I can make a list.
meep.
I think I really want to do this, though.

| | Then go for it. You know they'll always let you go back to the night auditing position if you want it.
And think of this: You won't have to deal directly with guests nearly as often. Might that make up for it being days?

| | Another thought - perhaps your lack of patience with the doofuses on days has something to do with your working at night (i.e., messing with cercadian rhythm, however it's spelled)?

That's the most important line in this thread. | Keep in mind that only today I have also stated that I want a kitten, a gorilla, a magic wand, a koala, and a new adding machine. I'm just sayin' is all.
Talked to the comptroller this morning, and asked her her feelings about me applyingfor the position. She was enthusiatic and encouraging about the idea. And after talking about that, we went over banquet transaction codes that aren't transferring from one computer to the other correctly, a mass posting I did earlier in the month to correct an imbalance created when we changed a process, the fact that the phone system hasn't been posting calls to the PMS all week, and new routing codes to simplify third party billing for the front desk and reservations.
Again, I'm just sayin' is all.
OK, good:
I really AM getting too old for night shift. The Elavil is helping, but it can't change the fact that I am not sleeping on the schedule my body wants me to sleep on.
The comptroller has been making subtle (HA!) hints that she is considering eliminating the night audit position entirely and changing over to a day audit as many hotels are doing right now. So jumping jobs will keep her from slipping my job out from under me.
I don't know what the pay difference is, but I'm betting it's more. I'll know Wednesday exactly where that will stand.
I'm 32 years old and still doing the same thing I was doing in college. I really, truly do like my job, but I've been restricting myself because of what I think I will or won't be able to handle. I've been on the Elavil for almost two years now, time to see what more I can do.
The difference between being in a small group and being in a microgroup of two people is enormous. Spacy seeks attention from me because I'm the only one there. In a small group, there is more than one person that the attention seekers can gravitate toward. So if I just act really boring for a while, attention seekers will, in theory, drift away from me because I won't be fulfilling their need.
I really need to stop talking to the guests. Seriously. Bad:
I'm doing a job right now that I'm incredibly good at and that I'm well paid for. Why look for trouble?
I'm not the most social person on the planet, and this will put me in direct contact with more people on a daily basis.
No more smoke breaks on demand.
Direct contact with my boss. All frikken day.
I might actually have to talk to people in the Sales department, and explain to them why we need to make sure that the people staying at the hotel give us actual money.
I really do have difficulty concentrating in a noisy environment. I wouldn't have my own desk, I wouldn't even really have a cubicle. So I would be moving from physical circumstances in which I work at peak to physical circumstances where I don't work at peak. I wonder if anyone will notice if I wear earplugs at work.
And let's not forget the obvious: I will be completely and utterly changing my lifestyle. HUGE change. Not that change is bad, but lots of change all at once can be daunting.

| | Good luck, Eris. Any change can be daunting...and what I was about to write next falls way too much into the category of aphorisms.
On a purely selfish level, it would be nice to see you more often and that might be possible if our schedules were closer.

| | Oh, well, it was a nice little day dream.
The posting finally went public on Wednesday and I applied. And then I actually looked at the posting...
It's not a promotion. It's a lateral move. For essentially less money since I'd be losing my shift differential. With the added benefit of never seeing the goob again, now that he's on night shifts.
So the application has been withdrawn. *sigh*

| | But wait a minute--I thought that postings at the University gave the salary guidelines as just that--guidelines. Can't you negotiate an increase?

Can't you negotiate an increase? | Really depends on how much I want to work for it, and how much the comptroller wants to keep the salary at the level it's at. I'm not in a fighting mood over this, and it's conceivable that the comptroller thinks she can fill the empty slot without a) meeting my demanded pay, which will be high and b) completely throwing the audit out of whack until they hire someone new.

| | The epic saga has reached it's satisfying close.
First, one of the biddies downstairs called me last week and BEGGED me to put in for the job. I explained to her about how it would be a bad move, especially since I wouldn't see the goob at all because of the difference in shifts. She pointed out that not seeing each other would strengthen our relationship. I pointed out that since we don't live together, being on different shifts would COMPLETELY separate us. She told me we should move in together. It all ended in some improbable arrangement in which we would both move everything around in an attempt to maintain the status quo that I'm already enjoying. Sort of like when I was musing about marrying the boyfriend so that he could get on my insurance so he could get a vasectomy.
On the other hand, it was really cool to hear someone tell me how much they respect the work I do. And especially nice to have someone tell me that my BOSS had been basically making the same observations.
But, yeah, I did withdraw the application. Which has started a new chain of events. The coworker has applied for the position, and has been hired.
On the one hand, this is a really good move for her, since it's actually conceiveable that she will do better physically and emotionally if she gets back on the day shift. On the other hand, I am secretly enjoying the fact that, after hearing the comptroller tell me over and over again that "nobody seems to have a problem with her work," the comptroller will be stuck with her and her complete inability to follow directions. Not to mention her frequent absences. (Did I mention the part about how the coworker completely missed the month of July because her dog died?)
Oh yeah, and now I get to train someone new. My chance to prove the last two coworkers were flukes, and that I can get along with someone else if they would just freaking WORK.

But is there any truth to the rumour that they are eliminating the night position?
