| | How the Best Company in the WORLD Turned Out Not to be and What I'm Doing About It | | Y'all know I was thrilled with my new job when I started in December. Sweet CEO. Fun work. Pay that meant I could afford to eat something other than macaroni and cheese again. Life was good.
Then, it wasn't.
I finished the project I was working on in July. The salesmen didn't sell any new programming work for me. After a layoff threat in October, I started working in a datacenter. This was sort of the computer equivalent of washing dishes and doing laundry every day. It sucks.
Then, I got word that I was expected to come in every Saturday, Sunday, holiday and vacation day for at least an hour or two to process trouble tickets.
And, I got really fed up with owners of porn sites screaming at me because their server went down after they monkeyed with something they shouldn't have.
And, they moved my office down into a basement store-room where I have no human contact. I feel like Milton in Office Space. All I need is a red stapler. I'm starting to mumble to myself. It's not pretty.
The best job in the world now officially blows chunks.
So, I start a new job on Dec 4
Sadly, this means I have to give up my work at the newspaper. The new job is over an hour away and I won't be able to work evenings any more. So, next week is my last at the paper too.
I'm going to be working on software for sleep study devices and to transmit and analyze tons of sleep study data. It sounds like an academic challenge, and the new company offers tuition reimbursement. So, pretty soon I am going to start working on my Master's degree.
I'm not sure how all of this is going to affect my time at EA. I should have some free time in the evenings, but I may be pretty grumpy after the commute home. We'll have to see how it goes.
Luckily, the people at my current company understand why I'm leaving, and I haven't burned any bridges. They said I could always come back once things start picking up here and there is more work. I'm not a big fan of change though; so if the new job works out, I'm probably just going to stay put.
Amy

| | Re How the Best Company in the WORLD Turned Out Not to be and What I'm Doing About It | | Yay!!!
I'm sorry things went South at the current job, but the new job sounds like an amazing opprotunity! My commute is about the same as your new one, and I won't like - it sucks, but you have your sattelite radio and your new van, and you can use that as decompress time!
I'm really happy for you!
You're so smart and tallented, and you deserve this!!! Good luck!! |

Sorry you had to go through a sucky time to get to it, though.

| | Re How the Best Company in the WORLD Turned Out Not to be and What I'm Doing About It | | Good luck! I have always had a 20+ minute commute and enjoyed having the time to process everything that happened and to keep home and work separate.

| | Re How the Best Company in the WORLD Turned Out Not to be and What I'm Doing About It | | The commute sucks a whole lot. My commute of 30 minutes can easily turn into 3 hours in the summer. I hope yours is not that bad. But I've found that since I got my satellite radio, I handle it better. I used to really want to kill people when I'd listen to commercial after commercial on normal radio. Now I can listen to the dead, and pink floyd, and be nice and calm while I'm trying to crawl through traffic. Proof is in the fact that I'm home now, the day before thanksgiving, in one peace, and I didn't try to kill anyone
Changes are always scary, but are usually just what you needed. And you haven't closed any doors, just opened more. Kudos! |

| | Re How the Best Company in the WORLD Turned Out Not to be and What I'm Doing About It | | In Blue Bell. Not the one in Fort Washington. So, near enough that you could meet me for lunch in the summers.
BTW, we're all showing up at your place tomorrow for Thanksgiving.

Especially if alcohol is involved!

| | Re How the Best Company in the WORLD Turned Out Not to be and What I'm Doing About It | | Be glad to have ya. We certainly will have plenty of food, and plenty of left overs from tonight. I made lasagna. From scratch, including the sauce. I told Marissa on Sunday that I was making it, she told Teddy, and he called on Monday to make sure it was true. As the poor kid was eating tonight, he told me how all he tought about all week was lasagna and turkey. It is sad he has to miss eating at home so much!!!
What time shall I expect you. Do you realize that Blue Bell is minutes from me? I have off on Dec. 8. Shall I meet you then???

| | Re How the Best Company in the WORLD Turned Out Not to be and What I'm Doing About It | | I'll be there on Dec. 8, but I'm not sure about timing of breaks and such yet. I'm going to be flex-timing it to avoid the rush hours.

| | Re How the Best Company in the WORLD Turned Out Not to be and What I'm Doing About It | | Wishing you luck on your new job.
But most of the best companies in the world have been taken over or gone into Chapter 11 or announced mass layoffs.
Like GM...where my friend's husband started in the early 1990's, unable to believe his good fortune at getting overtime for every hour he spent over 40 hours per week, even though he was an electrical engineer....
Or the airlines, where pilots made good six figure salaries and got generous pensions when they had to retire at 60....fugheddaboudit anymore.
About the only really "good" company to work for anymore is: Congress!
If you want a really good job, you might consider running in 2008.
Yes, I know I'm the resident curmudgeon about the changes in corporate America over the past 15 years....but good luck, anyway. |
