It's gone beyond just food...

Unfortunately, I've become a bit accustomed to having my food stolen out of the fridge at work. I can't even count the number of frozen meals I've gone to look for and have been missing. It doesn't matter if I write my name on the box or not, people still take it. I had a bottle of creamer in the fridge with my name on the cap that I hadn't used as a while and when I went back, it was all but gone. And it's not just me! Countless number of jars of jam, salad dressing, etc have come up missing. Currently there is a "missing" poster on the fridge asking about not just the first, but third missing bottle of spray butter. Sadly, it's just something I've come to expect and can only shake my head at.

Today, it's gone too far. I usually keep a couple bucks and change in my "buddy" (small rolling file cabinet/drawer with padded top for sitting) for when I want a pop, snack, or lunch in the cafeteria. Last Friday I got seventeen bucks from a coworker for some Avon stuff I'd ordered for her. I had at least $20 in the coffee mug. Today I go to grab a couple bucks for lunch, and it was ALL gone. The only thing left is a little bit of change. I know I haven't spent it, and while I know my coworkers might borrow it, they never would without saying something to me about it.

Grrrr....

Wow, that is gutsy. What are you going to do about it?

I don't know what I can do about it, that's just the thing. I talked to one of the receptionists b/c I had to go cash a check, and she mentioned that someone else had a sweater stolen off the back of her chair. Everybody says that you can't leave any food (chips, cookies, etc) overnight b/c the people on the cleaning crew will eat it, but I practically have my own little grocery store of snacks at my desk (on an open shelf) and I've never had any problems with that.

I guess I just won't keep any cash in the drawer anymore, or I'll find a better hiding place. It was just so convenient b/c I don't like to carry cash, but need it at work on occasion.

Re It's gone beyond just food...

So you think it was the cleaning people? No matter as I'd start locking up EVERYTHING. What a pain and a rotten way to work.

In contrast last week a co-worker replaced my entire bottle of mayo just because he broke the flip top off my bottle in the fridge. I felt guilty that he bought a bottle to replace a perfectly fine bottle just missing a flip top.

Unfortunately, where I keep the money doesn't have a lock, and the cabinets that do lock, I never got a key when I moved to this cube. I don't really have anything in the file cabinets that I worry about getting stolen, but now I wonder if I should have some of the personal things out that I have at my desk. I'd hate to have to take stuff home, but I don't want anything else stolen either.

We do have people here who would do the same type of thing about the maynaise. For the most part, everybody is really curteous and kind, but it only takes one bad apple and all.

Re It's gone beyond just food...

I had money stolen from my desk when I worked at the bank, and sure enough, it was the cleaning crew. I demanded a key for the desk drawer that locked, and when they couldn't find the right key for it they change the lock - it's a $5 part at most. Every job since I've asked for (and usually received) a locked drawer, and the times I didn't have one "coincidentally" match with the times money was taken from my wallet.

Sucks not to be trusting, but sucks more to be ripped off from.

Re It's gone beyond just food...

We have had issues in the past with cleaning crews. We are asked to lock everything up so no temptations. On my desk, only 2 drawers lock, so in the one that doesn't I keep tablets etc. It is rough when I can't get the lock to work, and I worry then all night that something will go missing.

I feel for ya Max. Unless you can get a lock, I guess you shouldn't leave money. Or as Erik said, get a dyepack.

Leave your change in your car console for those occasional snacks, and bring a cooler to work with a freezer pack with your lunch in it everyday.

That blows, Bree.

You need to demand a locked drawer. And buy one of those little spy cams and set it up in a plant or something.

I liked Erik's idea best of all.

What a shame, though. I hope you get a lock. And wouldn't it be a shame if the meatloaf for tomorrow were made with lots of bran and pureed prunes...

You'd be able to smoke out the culprit that way. Only I'd recommend something with chocolate. And, say, Ex-Lax.

Re It's gone beyond just food...

At Verizon, where hubby works, theft happens all the time. They have no coffee club anymore because somebody constantly takes the entire containers of coffee, sugar and creamer home.

People have money, lunches, etc stolen from their lockers as well.

In fact, one of Bob's coworkers was fired at some point, and later went on to commit 14 armed robberies in the Reading area. (Results not typical )

What kinda floors me is that these people aren't making minimum wage. They are paid reasonably well for unskilled labor and have GREAT benefits. AMAZING benefits. Bob and I managed to survive (not thrive) but survive on just his pay for a year before I started writing for the paper, and we had four kids.

Re It's gone beyond just food...

we were JUST talking about this at work, my coworkers have had their food stolen, I think I've lost only one frozen meal but the girl across from me has lost yogurt etc...

I was thinking of creating a dish using fried bugs then sending an email out after it's eaten saying what it was made of.

After the creamer thing, I said I was going to put the next bottle in a plain container and label it "breast milk."
