| | Doing What You Love for Work | | I used to write all the time. I started doing it for a living, and quit writing my stuff. I used to code for fun all the time. Now, I do it for a living and seldom touch a computer when I'm at home. Web Worker Daily » Blog Archive The Dangerous Myth of The Dream Job «
Now that I no longer write for the paper, I find I'm more interested in writing for Epinions every now and again.
On the bright side, I LOVE what I do at work. I like my job and I love doing stuff that I understand and enjoy. I just don't do much for EA or other stuff any more. I still have ideas for things I would love to do. I just never actually do them.

| | Re Doing What You Love for Work | | Great points in the article. I love what I do, but I have interests outside of work too, and manage to work in and around stuff that I really like, whether or not I do it for pay.

| | Re Doing What You Love for Work | | Some of that is about balance--you don't want to be doing one thing all of the time, even if it is something you love. You're fresher when you come back to it if you've balanced it with something else.

| | Re Doing What You Love for Work | | I agree. I'm struggling to find time for Eps when other stuff gets in the way. I always found time when it was the only writing I was doing other than blogging. |

| | Re Doing What You Love for Work | | Well, unlike Bridgette, I don't think anyone's ever going to pay *me* to just read books all day. So, yeah, balance. I organize things at work, and I let things flow at home. Wanna see me cranky? Watch me do housework.

| | Re Doing What You Love for Work | | For me the task is largely irrelevant. There have been "dream jobs" that have been torture, and jobs that people look down on that I loved going to every day.
It's all about the people. Eps is actually a good example. In the heyday it should have been a dream job - write whatever you want and get paid decently if people read it. Now would everyone who looks back fondly on the trust circles and un-fucking-believable cliques please raise your hand? The job was great, but the people ruined it.
