Can you step into my office for a minute?

Thought I was going to get laid off. Got a (small) raise instead. Go figure.

Happened to me once too. What a rush of emotion! First anxiety then relief!

Re Can you step into my office for a minute?

Congrats!

I understand the concern, though. My nurse manager called me at work (haven't spoken to the woman since she took over). My first thought was "what did I do wrong" -- no raise, but at least I wasn't in trouble.

Re Can you step into my office for a minute?

Congrats, Erik!

I like to do it the other way around. Make my boss think I'm going to quit and then ask for a raise. In my line of work, you only get very small raises unless you ask for them explicitly.

Actually, last time it happened, I didn't mean to make anyone think I was quitting, it's just that he felt my calling the meeting was ominous, and he was relieved when I didn't tell him I was quitting.

'Course, I was horribly underpaid, so he knew it had to be one or the other.

Re Can you step into my office for a minute?

Very good, Erik...

That is like my husband. He always thinks he's getting fired... and then he gets a raise and a promotion.

Re Can you step into my office for a minute?

There is an old Chinese proverb that states:

"He who expects nothing is never disappointed...."

But it's a great day when you have something to really be excited about. Way to go!
