| | Hubby's Kids' Math Scores | |
Hubby's inherited the group of kids that everyone in his school has called "The dumbest class in the school" ever since they were in 1st grade. And yet every year they promoted them and so Hubby got 6th graders this year who didn't know their times tables. He had to prep them for the big NYS test that was given in February.
The big 6th grade NYS tests have been problems for his school, who were warned that they could lose their charter because of the students' performance on these tests. The English tests came back last month with flat-out awful scores, and Hubby felt the weight of the school was sitting on his shoulders this spring.
Test results came in today --- 91% of his 57 students (three 6th grade classes) got 3's and 4's (B's and A's), while the remaining five students got 2's, no one got a 1, and he set a record for his school! No one in the history of the school ever had that many kids be that successful on the state tests... including the previous year's "smarter" kids! The administrators and other teachers have been congratulating Hubby all day and he is on Cloud 9 right now.

| | Re Hubby's Kids' Math Scores | | OMG that is wonderful MJ. Offer him my congratulations also. That is not a goal that is easy to achieve--he must have made a real connection to those kids. This is really great news. He deserves his moment of glory, up on the cloud!!!!

| | Re Hubby's Kids' Math Scores | | Conveyed all pats and congrats to the guy, who says thanks
And he didn't actually do the "I believe in you!" thing. All year long his mantra was more like "Goddammit, you have to pass this test for me to keep my job so GODDAMMIT YOU ARE GOING TO PASS THIS TEST and I will WORK YOU UNTIL YOU CRY AND THEN WORK YOU SOME MORE so you will PASS THIS GODDAMN TEST!!!!!" Well, he didn't literally say that to the kids, but that was his M.O. for teaching.

Doesn't matter what his M.O. was. He believed the kids could do it. | Well not quite. This past weekend he was telling me how he was going to defend his job performance to the principal (e.g. by showing her the homework he'd assigned, showing them their September test scores which indicated they didn't know 5th grade work, etc.) because he was sure they would have mostly 2's and he would be fired when the scores came in. Maybe it's more accurate to say his M.O. was "I'm going to CMA and I'm not going to let you get me fired!"

| | Re Hubby's Kids' Math Scores | | It's truly a shame that the kids didn't get this caliber of teaching in previous years. Think how far AHEAD they'd all be!
He may not have believed they could do it, but he clearly kept them from finding that out. Kids have a way of meeting your expectations, especially if they are low.
