Helping Hands Part 2

Last year I hosted a write off called Epinions Helping Hands. As many off you here can attest it went off very well and we were able to help many people less fortunate than ourselves.

This year I am hosting the write off again only I want to do the write off earlier so that people have an opportunity to earn more money on their opinion as well as get their donations to the charity of their choosing in a timely matter.

So I need all of your help in making this the biggest write-off ever done by Epinions. I would like to get over one hundred participants to top the 63 participants we had last year and I will create a website specifically for this write off.

The way the write off works is that each participant writes about whatever they want. They must agree to list somewhere in their review what charity, person or group will be given all the money earned on that epinion.

The write off submissions will be posted on July 14, 2001 throughout the day. You can write about anything you wish. The reason I am hosting the write off so early is that we can earn more money this way. If all participates agree to read the reviews at least once a month each review will receive payment again.

Last year the Toys for Tots donations decreased by more than half. I hope many of the participants will agree to donate to this program but I do not expect anyone to. Or leave a post here letting me know you wish to participate and I will add you to the list.

I'm in and Toys for Tots it is. I have a wedding in NH on the 14th but that's ok. I'll just get up at 4:00 am instead of 5:00 am to post. Great idea once again..thanks

Can we write more than one Epinion for this writeoff (that would make up for my not having known about it last year

I am not sure about Toys for Tots....

At a leadership conference here, I was talking about my parenting newsmagazine, and a policeman asked me to help publicize their local Christmas program, called "Shop With a Cop."

I think it's kind of cool. A police officer is paired with a disadvantaged girl or boy and takes her/him shopping for Christmas. Usually each child has $50 to spend (and they go to Wal-Mart, Target, or somewhere reasonable.) Not only does it give the kids some Christmas gifts, but it also gives them positive interaction with a police officer when perhaps most of the interactions the family has had previously have been negative---perhaps there is a parent or older sibling in jail, etc.

The program you talk about sounds absolutely wonderful. I think children need to be taught how important and kind pollice officers are in society. While there may be a few exceptions to the rule for the most part they do keep us and our families safe.

I missed the one last year, so count me in for this year. I will think about the charity I'd like to donate to. I will be in the midst of moving then, so may have to post a day or two early. How many participants are you up to now?

I want to make sure I understand this correctly. I can write a review on anything as long as the money earned goes to the charity of my choice, right?

My charity will be T.R.E.A.T.Y. Total Immersion Project. In Porcupine, SD Russell Means and other T.R.E.A.T.Y. members are building a Total Immersion School for the Oglala/Lakota kids. They will be totally immersed in their culture. If anyone wants more information check out:

If it's okay, I'd like to review two books about broadcast journalism and donate my proceeds to the Committee to Protect Journalists http://www.cpj.org.

The books are Daniel Schorr's autobiography Staying Tuned and Jeff Greenfield's analysis of the 2000 presidential election, Oh, Waiter! One Order of Crow!

If I get ambitious, I'll also write about Mark Twain at the Buffalo Express, which I've been enjoying a bit at a time for months. Perhaps this is the incentive I need to finish it.

go ahead and count me in. i'll be donating to operation st nick, which is a lot like toys for tots, but this also expands to school supplies and clothing. each family accepted goes to walmart on certain days, usually in august and december, and they are told that they only have so much money, per child, to spend. in august, it's school supplies. in december, it's christmas gifts.

Hmmm, that seems to be the big week for writeoffs. I've already committed to two and shown interest in a third. One of them is scheduled for the 14th as well. I'd love to participate but I don't think I can unless I can post early (preferred) or a few days late (between other writeoffs).

This is my first post to epinionaddicts and also would be my first write-off. I can't think of a better reason to post.

I'd love to participate in this and my charity of choice is Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia where my nephew Zachary is a leukemia patient.

Now to think of a topic to write about...

There is nothing more rewarding in life than helping another and doing so without expecting something in return. Last year I received my joy from watching my children smile as they placed many toys in the Toys For Tots bins than I did watching them open the gifts that Santa had lay under the tree for them.

It warmed my heart to know that we are instilling in our children the importance of helping others as well as teaching them that it is more important to give than it is to receive.
