| | I have just been informed (finally read the syllabus (is that how you spell syllabus?)) that I will have to write two 2-paragraph critiques and two 3-page essays for my lit class.
Now.
What's the difference?

| | As I see it, a critique is an analysis of a work; an essay is one on a more general topic and uses the coursework and readings for examples, framework, whatever. But I'd check with the prof.

| | That's the way I think too MJ. You critique other's work but you write an essay about a topic. With a critique you'll do a lot of compare and contrast or analyzing the content of something written by another....an essay is using your resources to create your own paper.

But check with the prof for what his expectations are and what he wants included. |

| | I used to edit my friends' papers in high school and college all the time. Maybe I'm a sadist, 'cause I absolutely LOVED it.

| | My skin is very very thick when it comes to my writing. I have no grand illusions. Would really prefer that people tell me where it sucks so that I can fix it.
With a grade in the balance I would be very happy to be red inked. For real.
An epinion I can write. Don't have to please anyone but myself.
Lit stuff is different.
Ya know?
Would really appreciate all the help I can get. This lit class is driving me nuts and I would rather not have to repeat it.
My first paper will be on Sir Gawain. Just get all your laughing out of the way now.

| | Well, I do have a little knowledge about Sir Gawain (the prominent figure in the Wife of Bath's Tale and its analogues) from my Chaucer class last semester. If you have any questions about medieval symbolism or such, let me know. If I don't know, my advisor, who happens to be a medievalist, will.
And if it's lit crit you're worried about, I am inundated every day and have managed to absorb some of it.

| | Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was one of the first peices I had to read in college. I loved it. Was for a class called "Ideal of Self in the Middle Ages." Very cool. |

| | Hey -- I just remembered something funny -- in the discussion of Sir Gawain, my friend was making a point about the Green Knight, but his name slipped her mind. Instead, she referred to him as the "Jolly Green Giant". LOL.
Thanks for making me remember that one. |

| | Well, I don't know much about that knight, but it's "gawain" to be a good paper
Grammar/sentence clarity is my specialty (not that you can tell from my posts here )

| | Hey, MJ, I don't think it's sadistic to like editing at all. In some ways, I think editing can be even more rewarding than writing. It's akin to teaching. You're taking the first molding of a creation and helping to shape it, to smooth out flaws, and to point out details that could make the difference between something being serviceable or being a work of art.
Editing is a great job!
