Writing invitation scams?

I have recently been invited to co-author a business book and although the details sound promising I am leery as for the potential of scam artists. Because this is from an individual and not a publishing company I wanted to do some research to make sure I am not walking into a well-planned scheme. Have any of you all heard of any scams that start with co-authoring invitations or of any things I should be aware of before jumping into this venture?

Re: Writing invitation scams?

I'm not aware of any schemes, Matt. But I'd exercise diligence before committing to anything.

I'd ask a lot of questions. How did he or she become aware of your writing? What about your writing or professional experience fits their idea for the book? What writing credits do they have? What business experience do they bring to the table? Do they have an agent? Have they queried the book proposal already?

If you're ever asked to put up any money, get out. At best its a sophisticated vanity press scheme, at worst it is a scam to prey on your ego after you've written a couple hundred pages.

If the proposal passes the smell test, then you need to discover if you can work with this person and decide who will take which responsibilities. Collaborating on a book is an art onto itself. I'd see how a couple of sample chapters went before committing to a new writing partner.

Good luck!

Brian

Re: Writing invitation scams?

So far the smell test is pretty good. They found my writing by some recent articles I have written for a business magazine. I was approached because these articles fit with the direction they wanted to take in the book. So far no $ has been discussed, which is a good thing.

Thanks for the advice, I will see where this goes.

Re: Writing invitation scams?

Actually, I'd recommend talking about money--the money that they are going to pay you for your writing services. And I would encourage you to get it in writing, even if it takes the form of a very simple contract. Who owns the copyright? How will royalties be split? What will you get paid upfront?

But it does sound exciting and I hope everything works out profitably for you!
