| | A word that is spelled the same backwards and forwards (radar) is a palindrome.
Is there a word for a number (343) that is the same in both directions? |

"Palindromic Number"
I also saw "Numeric Palindrome".
Pick the one that floats your boat the best!

Perhaps.
But Peter was asking about 'a word'.
'Palindromic' simply adjectivizes ( I make up a word when I need one) the word palindrome.
Just a thought...

| | Re: Is there a word . . . ? | | While I'm certainly not sure about the propriety of the word Palindromic (or of course adjectivizes either) it would be used properly if it was Pailindromic number which describes what kind of number we're talking about. Palindromic (adjective) number (noun).

| OK -- we hear a lot about parts of speech moving around, but to adjectivize "adjective?"
TOM!!!

"Palindromic number" it is. Now I'm off to post a poll about "adjectivize". And nouneate.

Erik's link confirms what a lot of us who shy away from math whenever possible already knew: Numbers can be elegant and understanding how they work can be vital, but mathematicians enjoy some jokes at our expense.
"Noble" numbers? Please. It's hard enough to apply that concept to people.
I once listened to a Cambridge don talk about imaginary numbers and when it became clear that his audience wasn't following him he said something very close to this: "Well, imagine that there is a dragon larger than the Earth. This number would be what you would use to describe the space between its vertebrae." He looked serious, which I suspect was part of the gag. | | |
