Some chapters gave me hives. When Clausen explained that a former middle manager making $47,000 a year needs to make about $150,000 a year as a freelancer to make up for social security taxes, medical benefits, etc, I began to think a career at McDonald’s sounded a lot safer.

That's one reason why the most important asset any self-employed person can have is a spouse in a job with those benefits. I think Clausen's comment is pretty over the top, don't you? And it underestimates some of the deductions self-employed people can take.
Have you ever resold an article, Amy? I have two so far, one already published and one upcoming, that I think have good potential as resales, probably with some modifications.
I do like
Writer's Digest, too. I used to subscribe and may start doing so again.
And I am very glad not to cover school board and city meetings (although I did that regularly back in the 1980's.) I'm writing for the religious press, and although the article I finished yesterday was on a school's technology upgrades I'll do lots of features, too.
