| | Travel Writing For The Web? | | Writer's Digest mentioned a new (April, 2001) travel website that is seeking material. It's called Kinetictravel.com.
If approved, they will publish 400 word travel essays called POEMS (points of expression on the map). Pay is $10.
I was thinking of trying them out. Does anyone here have any experience with them? |

| | 400 words -- wow, that is short. $10 for 400 words equals 2.5 cents per word -- or about a million times what Epinions is paying... |

| | Really! That's what I thought too, 400 words is short. Shoot, most of the things I do for epinions are over 1000 at least.
You know, you should go for it, see what happens, and then let us know. |

| | I checked out the kinetictravel.com website and found out that they will pay even more for longer pieces. It turns out that you get a foot in the door by writing a po(e)m for them. If they like what you write they will comission longer pieces ($150 for 1,000-1,500 word features). For more information look here: http://kinetictravel.com/about/index...n=contributors
good luck!

| | I don't have any exotic locales to write about, but it will be fun to check the site out! Thanks. |

| | This sounds sort of like Epinions early on, to me. Here is the compensation, in their words:
{quote] Incentives
As if the joy of writing and getting published weren’t enough, Kinetic also offers its contributors cash. Here's how it breaks down. You get $150 for feature articles and $75 for each column. PO(e)Ms earn $10 once approved by our editors. You will be paid within two weeks of the article’s publication. [/quote]
Doesn't this sound as though the emphasis is again on 'community and egoboo' thing, as opposed to cash? For the pomes, you get $10, and are entered into a drawing for prizes.
Even Epinions hasn't resorted to the 'prizes' kind of carrot. Colour me skeptical.

| | The thing of it is, though, I've written a bunch of travel/restaurant reviews for Eps, and I'll bet that I never got $10 in IS for the lot of them. Maybe it's time to rework them a little.

| | Just checked this site out.
The most popular poems seem to be about exotic, adventurous locales--Nepal, for example.
My state wasn't even listed as one of the choices
They have only published one "feature" (at $150) a month for the past six months or so.
Writers get selected to write a feature when their poems are highly rated.
The site has NO advertisers.
I might write a few poems and see what happens, but they won't be about Nepal. They will probably be about Missouri. |

| | Well, I just received an email from Kinetic Travel that the piece that I submitted more than a month ago has been published. They are supposedly sending my my $10 check now. Pretty painless, although it did take a while...

Nice job. You're a po[e]t! | | |
