new here, need help with a board game epinion

Hi,I'm new here. I've been at epinions for a little while and have written three reviews.

I have written, but not published a review for the board game "Beyond Balderdash" and am having trouble with the wording of how to describe the game. I want to say that its hard to keep your face straight, etc. I've played the game a few times would like to be able to publish it so others can read it.

Would it be helpful for me to post a bit of my not published review?

Well, I guess you could post a bit of the part which is giving you trouble. Otherwise, I don't see how people could help you. Is it a particular aspect of the game that you are having trouble talking about?

The problem with my review is that it is very short.

This is what the END of the review looks like:

We haven't played this in a while, but when we do, its always fun. You will laugh and find it hard to keep a straight face when you read the answers.

Basically I am having a hard time describing game play.

No idea about the game play

but reading your ending I did have this question:

You wrote that you don't play this often.

Why don't you play it more often -- lack of interest by others, time?

When do you pull out the game: rainy days, all nighters, silly days,

Good luck!

Why not play a game or two and see what you come up with.

I have found that even if I review a product I am familiar with, I can't really review it when I haven't used it in a while. Recent use is imperative in my reviews.

If you are worried about it being too short, why not try adding a story about your experience when you last played it. This will spice it up as well.

You might even try giving a few examples from the game and asking your readers to figure it out (I haven't played the game, so I'm not sure that's practical).

Or perhaps you could write your whole review as if you and your reader were playing a game of Balderdash and have the particular questions center around the game itself. You could then weave in information about how long it has been around, what the optimal number of players are, what makes it a game you want or don't want to play again, how easy or difficult the rules are to pick up, etc.

Good luck!

Hi -
The suggestions offered above are great. Here is what I would suggest - never having played this game, this is what *I* would want to hear about in your review to 1) understand the game and 2) make a decision on whether or not I would like this game:

1) Describe the basic content of the game. Is it a card game? Does it come in a box? What are the physical components of the game?

2) Describe how you play the game. Rules, the goal of the game, strategy, etc. Don't go into the descriptions of specific players you play with yet, just describe the rules and goals of the game -- how is it played, and how do you win?

For example (guessing from what you wrote above) - if you were playing GO FISH - you might describe it something like "You need at least two people to play this game, but you can play with up to six. The dealer gives each player five cards, face down. The remaining cards go in a pile in the center of the players, face down. Each player holds 5 cards in their hand, without showing the other players what they have. The first player chooses another player, and asks them if they have a specific card (which they are seeking to get to make a match). If they do, they must give it to you and they have to take a new card from the center pile.

The goal is to get a pair of matching cards, in which case you can then discard that pair onto the discard pile. If the other player does not have the card you requested, you have to GO FISH which means you select a card - face down - from the remaining cards on the center pile. The goal is to discard all of your cards by getting pairs, and to be the first one with no remaining cards in your hand.

3) Then describe some of the strategy, and some examples about when you play. This is where you might talk about bluffing, or keeping a poker face, or trying to intentionally mislead people, etc. This is also where you would want to share funny anecdotes about players you've played with that were exceptionally funny - good or bad - to play with. Tell us why it's fun to play, how long it takes to go through a game, etc. Also you might tell us some other games you like to play, and if/how they are similar -- e.g., this involves some of the same bluffing skills as poker, and the silliness of XXX, so if you like these games you might like Balderdash (or whatever is appropriate).

Does that help at all? Sorry so long winded.... email me when you actually post your review, I'd love to read it!
