Unable to access Epinions?
Hi! It is Alexis from Epinions. I don't usually post here (I would never be able to keep up with you guys!), but I hope you all will be able to help me with a very important matter.
We are very concerned that some users are unable to access our site. We would like to resolve this problem as soon as possible. If you are unable to access the site and could supply us with more information it would be very helpful. Just send an email to bugs@epinions-inc.com with the message subject "Can't Access Site" with the following info:
1) The type of error you are getting. (i.e. page timing out, message saying site does not exist)
2) Your IP address. The easiest way to get this is to go to: http://www.somebody.net/info.html and report the number that comes after "You are coming from:"
3) The address that you are going to for Epinions. This is slightly more complicated. On a PC, you need to open a MS-DOS window and type in "ping http://www.epinions.com". Then copy the information that is returned.
Thank you very much for your help with this matter.
-Alexis

Unable to access Epinions?
Hey Alexis!
Thanks for stopping by!
Would it help to have traceroutes from the source IP to Epinions? If that's something that you could use, I'd be happy to post instructions so that people could get that information for you.

Unable to access Epinions?
Alexis,
Followed your advice last week but still have trouble accessing. Usually 90% of the time I get a timed out or error message. I sure can't do my job as editor when this keeps me from reading/writing and commenting 90% of the time.
I haven't heard from anyone at epinions yet in reply to my bug report. This morning I received notices of comments and ratings on my stuff from epinions (that was NICE but when I copied and pasted the url to check them out, I timed out again and again.
Help please
Sandy

Unable to access Epinions?
Thanks for your concern, Alexis.
Upon sending the requested information to the above-captioned email address, I received in return a form letter that was at the same time polite, bland, uninformative, and useless (as are all good form letters)
Unfortunately, the letter suggested that, should I have more questions, I should visit the member center HELP site. That's particularly useless information, since the original contact regarded my (and others') inability to access the site.
But thanks, anyway.

Unable to access Epinions?
Most of the day yesterday, all day so far today, I get nothing.
Server not found or DNS error after a lengthy wait.
This is at work, behind a firewall I presume, and at home using DSL through a router with no software firewall.
Oh well, I should be working anyway.

Unable to access Epinions?
I had problems with Epinions and even tried the ping thing and got nothing. Must have done it wrong, anyway I installed Netscape and can now r/r from the site. Well I can't right now because Epinions is being a problem child again.
Also you might try using http://www/epinions.net and see if that doesn't help. I know if I use IE that is the way I have to do it.

Yep, this is getting old.
I have much less difficulty when posting/surfing from my home PC or when on a dialup connection from my laptop. Most of my difficulty is when surfing from my desktop on the LAN (MSE-5) or from one of my UNIX systems (NS-6).
I'm wondering if maybe it's the process of getting out through the firewall (proxy server) that's causing problems?
Will follow Alexis' suggestions, but I ain't holding my breath.
Rex
Nope, I'm on a firewall exclusively (I won't run my system without it) and I don't have problems accessing it.
Whose using Netscape? I bet that's the problem.

I have been trying to post a review of STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES Volume 2 all morning, and haven't been able to get the review into the database. I can access the site just fine - but when I upload the review, I get "We're sorry - there's been a problem. Please try again later." I don't even get the preview of my review.
I'm  and , as well as frustrated. (I'm using the emoticons because if I don't, I am likely to start a flame war, and I don't think that's appropriate behavior. In other words, I'm
!bitelip here.)
I'm going to grab one of DH's Samuel Adams Lites and drown my sorrows. Meanwhile I hope the staff at Epinions.com is reading this.

Unable to access Epinions?
I had a problem just now trying to post a comment after rating someone SH.
It would not show up. I think I will wait a while.
I notice the couple of pennies they gave me the other day were taken away from me too. I think you are correct in that the entire site is going haywire!
