Groupon
Has anyone else found Groupon yet?

There's an Ipod/Iphone ap, but you don't need that to participate. You can join the email list or just visit their web site to see what Groupons are available.

The basic idea is that a restaurant, company or organization (Local Zoo, for example) sets a discount price for a product or for admission and a minimum number of people who have to purchase in order for the Groupon to be a go. Most Groupons are good for weeks or months, although I've seen some discount admissions to local events. If you want to participate, you log in and pay by credit card. I bought a $35 certificate to a local used book store for $15. The prices there are amazing without the groupon, so I'll be going back - I even got a membership, so it's a win for them.

I also got a $30 gift certificate for a local coffee shop for $15. It's only good for beverages, but still a good deal. I drop in there when I'm nearby - about once/month, so I'll get my money's worth from them.

I like to browse other cities to see if they have Groupons I might use if I'm in the area -- we drive through Richmond on the way to NC, so I check out their offers as well as the ones near my parents. They're up to 83 areas now. Boston, Boise, Philadelphia, several NYC and several Ohio cities are in there. Free to join and prices for Groupons vary. There's a new offer every day or two.

I'm not rural and they don't have my town.

They only have one city in CT as far as I could tell when I signed up the day before yesterday. I haven't received any emails from them yet though. The city is in the center of the state... I certainly wouldn't drive that far for anything (other than maybe a good concert)... so I'm hopeful they will still have stuff from my side of the world.

They offer some good deals and some that are for places I wouldn't want to visit. For free...it's good.

I've been on two local lists for a couple of months. Still haven't gotten a deal worth biting on.

Today's Groupon -- apparently pretty much everywhere is $50 worth of Gap merchandise (with very few exceptions), including sale merchandise, for $25

Yeah, I live near our state's capital and they aren't on it either.

If you have a Gap near you, you can buy the Groupon from any other city and use it at your local Gap. I've seen other Groupons for national companies (Shutterfly, for example) and for web based companies. Usually you can use them from anywhere if they're web based. The Gap is the first national company I've purchased one from and you can use it at any of their brick-and-mortar stores, but not their web site.

Thanks, Judy. I signed up for Groupon, but there isn't a group in my town--I get messages about St. Louis since I'm there about 3 times a year.

But having read your post, I'll be on the lookout for other coupons, too.

Groupon just added 18 new cities, so you might want to check it out again.

I will have to. I did sign up, but I keep getting Chicago items and I am in Iowa. Smile Maybe they have something starting around here.

How close are you to Des Moines? It's on the list now.

I work in West Des Moines and put in a zip code here. I will have to check it out again, must have done something incorrect previously. Smile Thanks.
