I started my own Dietbet, and I'm hoping some of you might like to join me. This will be a smaller group I think than some of the other dietbets I've done, which I think is good for the "cheering everyone on" aspect.

Most of you know I'm a colon cancer survivor -- 13 years now. I went to a new Gyn this spring and she referred me for genetic counseling. The appointment was today.

Somewhere between 2 and 7% of people who develop colon cancer have a hereditary type called Lynch Syndrome or Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colorectal Cancer. Mouthful, so mostly it's called HNPCC or Lynch syndrome. The average age of diagnosis of colon cancer in the general population is 72 - that would be my mom at diagnosis. The average age of diagnosis for people with Lynch syndrome is 45. I was 46.

To summarize a 1 hour consultation: The bad news - if I have Lynch syndrome, there is a 50% chance that my kids will. That would give them approximately an 80% chance of developing colon cancer, and a smaller risk of several other cancers. The good news is that, like other cancers, early diagnosis is the key and frequent screening could keep them safe. If they don't have the gene, they'd only have the same risk as the general population -- so no need for such frequent screening.

If I don't have any of the 5 genes that are associated with Lynch, but I have some other abnormal gene, they are likely to offer my whole family (cousins and all) free testing so they can follow up to see if this was some other hereditary cancer.

Next - waiting to see if my insurance is going to cover the first choice lab for this screening.

So this curious thing would happen where we'd here a weird water sound, then soap would fill our toilet. It was happening around the time we were flooding from the neighbors above. We've had plumbers here who have checked our lines that are clear. Once when they were here the upstairs neighbor was doing laundry, and they sent a camera down and were able to see what is happening. The clear lines get completely blocked by the soap, and there is so much soap it has no place to go but up our drains. It is allegedly caused by the upstairs tenant using too much soap.

We are told this is an issue between us and them and the condo won't help now that they discovered the problem. The tenants won't respond if we knock on their door. The unit owner doesn't respond to our emails.

So we have soap coming up past our toilet seat and in our shower. We can't flush our toilet or use our drains whenever they do laundry above.

So how do we get this resolved when no one is willing to help us? I feel so helpless and angry that I think of crazy things to do to scare the renters out of their unit, but I really don't want to use those means. I just want it resolved.

ARGH.

So, my sleep study said moderate apnea, here, have a machine. Okay, not happy, but if it will keep hubby from getting mad about snoring, fine.

It's not going well. Instead of getting more used to it, I'm getting less. I'm not any better rested even on the nights that I do sleep well, in fact perhaps a bit less rested. And it's getting harder and harder to fall asleep. Saturday night I lay down for an hour before getting up, even though I was very sleepy and tired, then went back to bed around 1:30 and it was probably close to 2 before I fell asleep. Last night I was completely exhausted, but despite waiting til almost 11:30 to go to bed, once again I couldn't sleep and got up. Went back to bed around 1. Then this morning I woke up with the machine completely off - I took it off at some point during the night and I don't even remember doing it.

I'm no better rested, and I'm still snoring, although it's much less than it was before, enough that DH can stand it. I've been to the sleep doc and he made some adjustments in the pressure settings but that's been zero help. I do go back in two weeks and we'll have to see what to try from there.

DH did so well with his once he got used to it and got all the proper adjustments, and he sleeps so well. It's just driving me bonkers. Everything I read basically boils down to "just stick with it". ARGH.

ARGH.

Last night we went to another couple's house for dinner and games. Four couples in all. Sat down to dinner, I took my first bite of a shrimp linguine one of the gals had made. The shrimp was a smallish size, so I didn't cut it in half before I put it in my mouth with a small forkful of pasta.

The shrimp almost immediately slid to the back of my mouth, and lodged perfectly across my throat. I tried a few times to swallow it whole, it wasn't that big after all, and I've had things "seem too big to swallow" and they go down fine.

Not this time.

I started to panic, got up, gesturing to my throat. Couldn't make a sound.

All I remember was everyone was saying "Are you okay? Are you alright?" and I couldn't say anything. One of the guys finally came up behind me and started doing a Heimlich, and it popped sideways enough that it went down my throat.

Holy crap...I coughed a couple of times, but otherwise was fine. All I could think of was that if Terry hadn't known what to do, we were in the country in a pretty remote location, and it could have been bad.

The rest of the meal, I cut all my shrimp into tiny little pieces!!

(2011-2013) Hyundai and Kia reimbursements for overstated MPG

I'm not sure if this goes in hot deals or deal talk, but if you've bought one of several 2011 - 2013 hyundai or kias, they've misstated their MPG on their label and therefore will reimburse you the difference. They'll do this for as long as you own the vehicle.

You'll have to get your mileage checked by the dealer and then they're supposed to mail you the debit card.
